Located on Provincial Route 5, its dam has an extension of 360 ms, with a width of 7 m at the top and 130 m at the base; the collected water is used for the irrigation of 60,000 há. In addition, two power stations take advantage of the force produced by the evacuation of waters in the great main dam and in an auxiliary one, located below the first one.
The lake of the dam -5.400 há – is suitable for water sports and sport fishing (atherines and trouts). On the southeast bank and surrounded by Los Cóndores mountain range, Embalse Town stretches throughout the R.P. 5 (population: 6.450) with its villas and colorful cottages as well as its shops, tea rooms and restaurants that give a picture of this place founded during the second decade of the past century. Seven kilometers from the northwest coast, we find Villa del Dique (pop.:2.310), founded on the 11 th of October, 1935. Besides the mountain landscape that surrounds the town we find there a resort where camping is allowed and has appropriate services. In the Municipal Park there is a wooded place, suitable for camping with comforts and sanitary services, Olympic and children´s swimming-pools. Tea room. The resort of the western coast of the lake, has a beach of cement and sand, with locker rooms and toilets. Fishing of the pejerrey in its waters. In the neighborhoods, in the place called Los Nogales -only 900 ms from the town there are remainings of Comechingones´houses. Three kilometers towards the West, we find Villa Rumipal (pop.:1,608.), which has a resort, a jetty and a camp ground; by the end of January the Festival of the Lake is carried out and diverse nautical competitions take place. |

En 1911 el Río Calamuchita causaba grandes daños con sus crecidas en las vías y en los campos. Será la empresa inglesa Ferrocarril Central Argentino quien colocará la piedra fundamental en la Quebrada del Río III. Esta fecha es recordada como el aniversario de la fundación de la localidad de Embalse en el paraje denominado “El Pueblito” del Departamento Calamuchita, en la Provincia de Córdoba.
El comienzo de la primera guerra mundial hace que la empresa inglesa abandone las obras las cuales son retomadas recién, en 1927 por los Ingenieros argentinos Santiago Fitz Simon y Juan Carlos Alba Posse, su proyecto era de mayor magnitud que el anterior y fue concretado entre los años 1927 y 1936.
La obra se compone de un dique principal de 50 mts. de alto y 360 mts. de largo construido en roca granítica, la torre chica que en el extremo inferior posee un túnel que se utilizó para el desvío del caudal del río mientras se realizaba el paredón del dique, la torre grande de 40 mts. de altura que toma el agua para la Usina Hidroeléctrica el vertedero de 300 mts. de largo y que brinda además un espectáculo de gran belleza cuando el agua del dique rebalsa.
Este es el mayor embalse artificial de la provincia de Córdoba y por mucho tiempo fue el más grande de Sudamérica, con una superficie de 5.426 Has, un volumen de 735 Hm3, y una cota máxima de 50 mts.
